Our guest on Sree’s Sunday #NYTReadalong is Manisha Sinha, a professor of American History at the University of Connecticut and a leading authority on the history of slavery and abolition and the Civil War and Reconstruction. She is the author of a new book, “The Rise and Fall of the Second American Republic.” I will be the guest host. We will be live at 8:30am ET on Sunday morning on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram and our Digimentors website. If you miss the live show, you can always watch it later, on demand.

Manisha’s book focuses on the Reconstruction in American History, the period of time after the Civil War that saw, according to the book review in The New York Times, “..The passage of constitutional amendments that guaranteed citizenship, equal protection under the law and the vote for Black men. They also saw the rise of a powerful Freedmen’s Bureau, Black voting on a massive scale and the election of thousands of Black representatives to national, state and local office. More than 600 Black politicians were elected in the South to state legislatures alone.” It all came crashing down in a counterrevolution. The End of Reconstruction was led by counterrevolutionaries, which led to the Jim Crow era in the American South, the Ku Klux Klan and segregation.

There are some who say we are facing a second counterrevolution today, coming on the heels of the Women’s Rights, Civil Rights and LGBT rights movements of the 60s, 70s and 80s. Professor Sinha will explain how history can be our guide to the politics of today.

We will also talk about Kamala Harris, Donald Trump's comments about identity and more.
