Howard County (Maryland) implemented a bell-to-bell ban on cell phones starting March 3. Pallavi Guha, a Towson University professor who studies social media, and the mother of a teenage girl in Howard County Public Schools, is our guest on Sree’s Sunday #NYTReadalong. This policy is similar to the one that last week’s #NYTReadalong  guest, Raj Goyle, supports in New York. Neil Parekh will be the guest host.

We will be live Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. ET / 12:30 p.m. GMT / 6:00 p.m. IST (Sunday morning in the US, Sunday afternoon in the UK and Sunday evening in India). If you miss the show, you can always watch the replay, right on this page. At 10 a.m. ET / 7:30 p.m. IST, we will focus on NYT for Kids, a once-a-month print-only special section from The New York Times. Through a special arrangement with the editors, we will make the .pdf available on our website as a free download between Saturday morning and Sunday at Noon ET.

Topics

  • Professor Guha is in a unique position to share insights on the cell phone ban both because she studies social media and online harassment, and because she has seen how the ban has played out first-hand. It's interesting to note that Howard County’s previous policy restricted cell phone use during the school day, but did not forbid it completely.

  • We will also ask her about research she has done on how teenage girls of color in Baltimore have responded to harassment on social media and how some parents have turned to Generative AI to better understand how to help their children respond to harassment.

  • Professor Guha is also a newsroom editor, supervising student journalists working on the “The Baltimore Watchdog.” She’ll talk about their extensive election coverage and their coverage of mental health on campus.

  • She is the author of “Hear #Metoo in India: News, Social Media, and Anti-Rape and Sexual Harassment Activism,” which examines the role media platforms play in anti-rape and sexual harassment activism in India.

NYT for Kids

  • We will offer a special look at the print-only last-Sunday-of-the-Month NYT for Kids. Joining us for this special segment will be 11 y.o. Emily Parekh (my daughter).

  • It’s “The Huge Issue.” You won’t want to miss it.

  • Every month, on the last Sunday of the month, you can find the .pdf of NYT for Kids on our website until Noon ET on Sunday. Look for that Sunday’s show and click through for the #NYTKids .pdf.

  • We are able to share the .pdf for a limited time each month through a special arrangement with The New York Times.

  • Tip: To read this issue, rotate it sideways and pull the pages apart. (I found it easier to read the .pdf on my phone. Pinch and Zoom, and rotate as needed.)

  • The .pdf is no longer available on our site. We will upload the NYT for Kids segment from today's show shortly.

Next Show (April 13): Alison Kosik, former CNN Business Correspondent

  • Sree and I are taking next week (April 6th) off.

  • We’ll be back April 13 with Alison Kosik, freelance reporter and anchor for ABC News and former CNN Business Correspondent.

  • She is the author of the recently released “What’s Up With Women and Money?”

Last Week (March 16): Raj Goyle, Founder of Phone Free New York

  • ICYMI, last week’s show featured Raj Goyle, Founder of Phone Free New York.

  • In addition to talking about a proposed bell-to-bell cell phone ban in New York Schools, we also covered congestion pricing, the Trump Administration’s attack on the legal profession, and more.
